People are having quite different opinions whether the color of the Reddit upvote button is red or orange (or red orange/orange red). Acquiring one of its color values (HEX, RGB, etc.) and inputting the value into some online color finder (or similar) will yield various results. Some will say this is a red orange, some will say orange red/orangered. Let’s look at some facts: The Reddit upvote button (or “undo upvote” button if you please) consists of a gradient (multiple shades of a color) varying in lightness but with a constant hue.

**HUE**

Hue can be defined as the color/shade of a color – e.g. red, orange, yellow, green, cyan, blue, etc. Hue is usually measured in degrees (hue angle (H)), varying from 0° to 360° (359°) where:

* Pure red equals H: 0°.
* Pure yellow equals H: 60°.
* “Pure” orange therefore equals H: 30°.

Now, a “neutral” (in lack of a better word) red orange/orange red (an equal amount of both red and orange) would then equal a hue angle of 15°.

Using Photoshop and the eyedropper tool, **I’ve measured the hue angle of the Reddit upvote button to be 16°.** This means that the Reddit upvote button leans more toward orange than it does toward red, making this an orange red color. It is neither red nor orange. It is both. It is very close to being a “neautral” orange red/red orange, but it IS a little more orange than it is red, even if it is just by a tiny bit.

**CONCLUSION**

Reddit’s upvote button is in fact orangered, but it is also nearly as close to a “neutral” red/orange mix as you can get. If you must choose, it is orange. But it is also red. **It is orangered.**

Disclaimer: Keep in mind that color can (and will) be perceived dierently for dierent people, depending on their eyes and the viewing conditions, e.g. lighting conditions and your viewing device (your screens are not likely to be calibrated to display color the exact same way).

Web users, with their diminishing attention spans, are inexorably drawn to these shiny, brightly coloured messages with small, relevant, clearly-displayed nuggets of information. They’re straight to the point, usually factually interesting and often give you a wake-up call as to what those statistics really mean.
At infographic.tv we provide handpicked collection of the best infographics and data charts from around the world.
