The discovery of a liquid ocean and a large underground body of water on Mars have scientists extremely excited about the possibility of life outside earth- with many evolutionary scientists believing that not just liquid water- but oceans of it- are essential for the evolution of life, let alone its sustainment. But what would happen to life here on earth if the oceans suddenly disappeared?
Earth’s oceans are vital for life for two main reasons: first they absorb and distribute solar radiation, and they help regulate temperatures around the world. Without the oceans, heat from the sun would bake the equator but bring almost no energy to the poles. The ocean water on earth absorbs all of that solar energy, which generates currents which in turn circulate warmth from the tropics further north and south, and bring cold water back to the equator. This heat cycle helps ensure that no place on earth is too hot for life to survive and brings warmth to colder areas of the planet. Because water has a high specific heat capacity, it can absorb a lot of heat without a huge rise in temperature- unlike land. Without oceans, land would absorb all of that solar energy and most places would be a barren and scorching desert.
The second function of our oceans is to feed the water cycle- or movement of water from the seas to the clouds- to land via rain and then back again to the sea. When water is heated around the earth’s equator it evaporates and forms clouds. As all that warm, moist air rises it pulls in cooler air underneath- this further helps keep temperatures more even around the earth and is why the Mediterranean, despite being so far north, is so temperate.
So what would happen if the oceans all disappeared overnight?
